The Colac Turf Club has a long and proud tradition of turf racing, education and training of horses over more than 145 years. Colac Turf Club has rallied on two occasions now, back in the early 2000 when it was suggested that Colac should race at Geelong - the local rallied and saved racing at Colac. In 2008 it was proposed that funding for training be removed from Colac - the Colac Turf Club with the support of the Colac Otway Shire fought hard for this to be overturned, a fight that was sucessful.
Nestled at the foot of the Otway Ranges, the Colac Turf Club is one of the renowned country racecourses in the Great Ocean Road region. The club itself is just 3km from the city centre with easy V/Line access from Melbourne close to the course.
The Colac Gold Cup has become a much sought after trophy among top trainers within Victoria for many years and the record books show why - the past five winners of the Country Racehorse of the Year have either won the Colac Gold Cup or been trained on course.
The club now hosts 3 major event days - the ever popular Colac Christmas Races in December the Colac Gold Cup in February and then in March the rural community comes together to join in the fun and activities at the Farmers Big Day Out Races.
While in the area, may visitors also take time out to enjoy the breathtaking coastline of the Great Ocean Road between Lorne and Apollo Bay. Colac is the major inland town servicing this tourist region. The enchanting Otway Fly Tree Top Walk, in a magical rainforest near the spectacular Triplet Falls and magical waterfalls are just 40 minutes from Colac. Get a bir's eye view of the rainforest as you walk along a 600m trail built 25m above the forest floor in the tops of the magnificent tall trees.
After your day at the races or the end of a sightseeing trip in the region, make sure you sample some of the local wines and cheeses and a platter of freshly caught seafood. You can even sample your way along the Otways Food and Wine Trail all the way to Apollo Bay or the Twelve Apostles.
